Boy Overboard - Morris Gleitzman

Chapter 12 of this book is really dramatic. Jamal, the main character, is only 12 and lives in Afghanistan. He loves football and one day follows his dad into a football stadium because he thinks he will meet a football manager and become famous. However, when he gets into the stadium he doesn't find a famous football team or Sir Alex Ferguson, he finds Taliban soldiers about to punish women who have been caught teaching illegally. One of those women is his mum!
Jamal knows he has to do something and runs to save his mum, but he is too late. Before he can reach her a taxi screams into the stadium, amongst a cloud of smoke and his mother is rescued before the soldiers can shoot.

It is only later that Jamal realises that his mother's rescuer is his father, a true hero!

This was very exciting and dramatic, I was so pleased that Jamal's family is safe but I was sad that the other women in the stadium did not escape.

I can't wait to read the rest of the book. Jamal's family is now on the run and I really hope that they can escape to somewhere safe.
